Rambam paskens like the other tzad that it is a mitzvah. See Lechem Mishne in perek 7. Rav Wahrman discusses this in that piece. The way we today make charoses, it's more a metaphor for being an eved Hashem than servitude to Par'oh. An outsider looking can't tell the difference. Seems like mortar either way.
