hate and love that eclipse all else; reward is only when you go the extra mile

Kozbi bas Tzur was a Midianite princess.  Rashi writes that We see the degree of hatred Midian had for Bn"Y from the fact they were willing to sacrifice even their nobility to the goal of causing Bn"Y to be chotei.  R' Shtienman in his Ayeles haShachar points out that the people of Midian were maaminim. They accepted that Hashem would be angered at Bn"Y's actions and take care of them. If Midyan believed in Hashem and knew he would be angered by arayos, then doesn't it follow that Hashem would also be angry at them for hatching such a plan?

We see that a person can be so bent on bringing someone else down that they lose sight of the fact that in doing so their own actions are a far cry from causing nachas ruach to Hashem.  Apply as you will to current events.

We have almost the flipside of this attitude in the parsha.  Pinchas gets a huge reward for curbing Hashem's anger against Bn"Y and bringing a mageifa to a halt. The Agra d'Kallah is medayek that 2 times the pasuk mentions ּ בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל, but in the middle it doesn't mention their name, it just says בְּתוֹכָ֑ם.  The pasuk could just as well have ended  וְלֹֽא־כִלִּ֥יתִי אותם, or could just as well have said in the beginning הֵשִׁ֤יב אֶת־חֲמָתִי֙ מעליהם.  Why  does it repeat the name of Bn"Y unnecessarily 2x and then leave it out?  He answers that the pasuk uses the full name בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל when speaking about Bn"Y being saved in order to emphasize that in essence, Bn"Y is pure and does not deserve punishment.  That's their identity.  When it comes to the middle of the pasuk where it speaks about בְּקַנְא֥וֹ אֶת־קִנְאָתִ֖י for what they did wrong, the pasuk switches to a pronoun, to a kinuy, because when it comes to doing wrong, that's not us, that's not our identity or who we are.  Then he adds an additional point:

The ַקַנְא֥וֹ אֶת־קִנְאָתִ֖י is not the reason for the reward of Pinchas.  The reason for the reward is הֵשִׁ֤יב אֶת־חֲמָתִי֙ מֵעַ֣ל בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל and וְלֹֽא־כִלִּ֥יתִי אֶת־בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל.  The קַנְא֥וֹ אֶת־קִנְאָתִ֖י is just the means to that end.

Hashem kavyachol turns a blind eye to his own kavod and instead places the emphasis on Bn"Y being saved, because His love of Bn"Y kavyachol outweighs all else.

Midian is all about hatred blinding a person to their lack of kavod shamayim.  Pinchas' reward speak about Hashem's love outweighing even kavod Shamayim.  Opposite attitudes.

2) Pinchas saved Klal Yisrael and got this great reward.  Tremendous!  But didn't Moshe do that for 40 years?  Didn't Aharon in parshas Korach bring a stop to a mageifa by offering ketores?  Where is the applause for them, where is the special reward of a bris?

I saw a beautiful answer.  Moshe and Aharon were the leaders of Klal Yisrael.  As leaders, they are supposed to stand up for their constituents, for the people.  That's their job.  You don't get extra rewards for doing your job.  Pinchas wasn't even a kohen (according to some shitos) yet.  He had no responsibility to stand up for anyone.  For him to step forward and take the bull by the horns, risking his life along the way, is above and beyond the call of duty.  That's why he gets reward.

  1. Rav Shteinman's vort assumes the Midianites were monotheists. I wonder if there is any proof that is the case.

  2. I agree, that's a good answer. The Torah Temima's is ok,
but yours is better, because yours is necessary to explain why Moshe's intercessions were not completely successful while Pinchas's was

  3. I thought an even simpler answer is the fact that Zimri was free to turn around and kill Pinchas. Pinchas literally put his life on the line. Moshe and Aharon asked Hashem to forgive Klal Yisrael, but I don't know if they ever faced the same degree of mortal danger.

  4. Were the Eigel worshippers and the Meraglim any less of a threat to Moshe than Zimri to Pinchas? True, Zimri had the legal right to kill Pinchas. But a threat that is unsupported by the law is no less dangerous. Maybe the Eigel worshippers, because when they saw Moshe they themselves realized their mistake. But the Meraglim?
But to the point: I essentially agree with your answer. I am just saying that the Torah Temima's answer is only half the answer, it is incomplete unless you include your answer. Yes, Moshe's intercessions only brought partial kapparah. But why? Why were Moshe's intercessions not as successful as Pinchas'es? What's annoying about his answer is that until you explain that difference, your answer is incomplete; and after you explain the difference, his answer is not really necessary. The difference in kapparah is a siman of something else, and it is the 'something else' that really answers the question. Why was Pinchas' action more effective? Because Pinchas risked his life more than Moshe did. Because of that courage of mesiras nefesh on behalf of Klal Yisrael, it yielded a qualitatively greater kapparah.

  5. The first piece in the Tiferes Shlomo on the parsha does not address this question directly, but makes the same point:
It is really an amazing thing to say that even though something is assur, tzadikim go ahead and do it anyway and get schar, but this is a whole different topic. Two weeks ago I said over the hesber of the Noam Elimelech for Moshe hitting the rock at instead of speaking to it (which he justifies also as an act of necessary disobedience that was done because of Moshe's great love for Klal Yisrael) and introduced it by saying that if you are a chossid, pieces like this speak to you -- the idea of the love for Klal Yisrael transcending even a direct command from Hashem -- and if you are a misnaged, pieces like this are exactly why you are a misnaged -- the idea that anything can transcend a command by Hashem is deeply disturbing. A kollel guy came over to me afterwards and asked, "How can the N.E. say that?" to which I just answered, "Exactly my original point."

    1. Why does this bring to mind "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done"?
This is such an interesting, and dangerous topic. Does schar v'onesh prove right and wrong? Does bigger onesh prove greater evil? Some say yes, from Rashi in the beginning of האיש מקדש. It must mean that it's a siman that it is a better thing. On the other hand, if you were asked, is it worse to live as husband and wife with a non Jewish woman, or with a Jewish woman and you don't care about טהרת המשפחה? Some would say, as I heard from Reb Moshe, that the onesh for the former is greater, but the rishus of the latter is far greater.
And obviously, as you indicate, this lies at the heart of every great rebellion, from Zimri to the Ma'apilim. Evidence of the ancient dialectic is the odd divrei Chazal about צדיק כתמר יפרח and the ultimate vindication of Korach.
Reminiscent of the deathless bon mot "nonsense is nonsense, but the history of nonsense is science," If someone were casting about for a doctorate thesis topic, which would also guarantee that he'll have trouble with shidduchim, this would be a good choice. I certainly would love to see the subject carefully examined.

    2. I have to mention this story because 1) it is good and 2) it is on topic. The NE is called the Sefer Shel Tzadikim, but there are some who claim that the Alter Rebbe, in addition to the Sefer shel Beinonim=Tanya, also wrote a Sefer Shel Tzadikim, but he felt that this knowledge should not be revealed into the world. He put a cheirem in this world and the next on anyone who would read the sefer. Apparently they agreed in Shamayim that it should be kept secret because his house had a fire and the sefer was lost, and the Alter Rebbe also apparently was made to forget the contents. After the fire he asked his son, the Mittler Rebbe, whether he recalled the contents of the sefer. The Mittler replied that he never once opened it because of the cheirem. The Alter Rebbe pleaded, "You must have taken a peek at some point and remember something?" but Mittler Rebbe responded that no, he hadn't, because how could he given the cheirem. To which the Alter Rebbe responded, "Where was your mesirus nefesh for chassidus?!"
I think this is the same idea in the TIf Shlomo, in the NE -- Hashem places something off limits, but it's really just a test of our mesirus nefesh to see if we will push the boundaries given a cause to do so. Will Moshe accept that he has to talk to the rock, or will he defy G-d and hit it if that will help Klal Yisrael? Will Pinchas be willing to kill Zimri and give up the kehuna if it will save Klal Yisrael? Or will they stick to the letter of the law no matter what the consequences?
I don't know how to relate to these ideas. Is it fair to call them dangerous? Incomprehensible? Or is it just that my mind is too little to grasp what is going on?

    3. I think everyone agrees that the Mishna in Brachos about הפרו תורתיך applies, and saving Klal Yisrael like by Esther or Ya'el. I guess everyone can make that decision on his own, and he'll find out after 120 whether it was justified.

In case there are readers who will find this interesting: The Ramchal in his Kinas Hashem:

In Reb Chaim Volozhiner's name, in Keser Rosh at the end of the Siddur HaGra, #132:
