on language and lomdus
I have a posting on the Mishmar blog here on the influence of language on the intellectual development of halacha. The post is titled "On Language and Lomdus: the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, lashon kodesh, and Brisker lomdus". According to the hypothesis of language relativity, the use of language is not just a means to communicate ideas, but influences and shapes how we think about the world. The use of Hebrew or the jargon of lomdus is not just an arbitrary choice of language, but perhaps is instrumental in helping us achieve a specific construction of reality. Your feedback appreciated on Mishmar.
