hachana - Purim on Motzei Shabbos
When Purim falls on Motzei Shabbos one issue to be mindful of is the prohibition of hachana, preparing on Shabbos for a weekday. For example, if one carries a megillah to shul on Shabbos, one should try to learn from the megillah on Shabbos itself, otherwise the act of carrying is purely preparatory for the kerias hamegillah which will take place after Shabbos. Rav Aviner has an interesting post regarding costumes. His position is that since a child who dresses up on Shabbos gets enjoyment on Shabbos itself from the costume, there is no problem of hachana involved (link). Of course, there might be other, more serious issues, such as putting on makeup, involved in getting dressed up, which must be avoided. I am not sure everyone would agree with Rav Aviner's psak on this one; consult your Rabbi or get keep the costumes put away until after Shabbos is over.
